Economic Development


The goal of the Economic Development Program is to empower the Aroostook  Band of Micmacs and its membership, to acquire, develop and manage assets as a means of achieving self-sufficiency.

The Economic Development Director is responsible for assisting the Aroostook Band of Micmac Indians and its members develop entrepreneurial opportunities and resource acquisition for community development.


The Self-sufficiency Assistance Program is designed to provide assistance to Micmac community members that are unemployed or underemployed through training and self-employment opportunities. Services available under this program are intended to:

1. Provide basic education on business startup and operation

2. Provide technical assistance during all phases of the development and operation of businesses owned by individual Micmacs.

3. Provide small amounts of capital to individuals for vocational training and self-improvement.

4. Provide assistance in obtaining insurance, licenses or professional designations needed for self-employment.

5. Provide assistance for business expansion or securing of business contracts.

6. Provide assistance for obtaining special tools or clothing for employment.


Enrolled members of the Aroostook Band of Micmacs may apply for assistance.  The member must reside in the service area (Aroostook County). To qualify for assistance, a business must be at least 51% owned and controlled by the Tribal Member applying for services. Training requests may be approved within the limitations of finding availability when it is determined the applicant meets the above listed criteria, is in need of such training, and that the training is feasible.


The Aroostook Band of Micmacs may approve requests for assistance ranging for $100 to $2000.  No single person or business entity may receive a total of over $2000 in assistance during a single budget year.  In order to reduce administrative burdens, delays and to encourage better planning on the part of applicants, only one request per person will be processed per year regardless of whether the maximum amount of benefit has been exhausted


Services will be rendered to members of the Aroostook Band of Micmacs who reside in the service area.  Priority will be given to tribal members seeking startup funds that enter the business startup training programs and submit complete written business plans.
